Area code 814

Area code 814 is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, U.S. telephone area code, which serves its northwestern and central regions, including the cities of Altoona, Bradford, DuBois, Rosewood, Meadville, Oil City, Johnstown, and Warren, as well as the boroughs of State College, Brockway and Rimersburg.

814 is one of the original area codes established in 1947 and is currently the only one of the original four area codes of Pennsylvania that still has its original boundaries. The region is largely rural and is the largest area code region in Pennsylvania.

Split controversy

In December 2010, due to the fact that 814 is getting close to exhaustion, a geographic split was approved, with the northwestern area (around Erie) switching to the new area code 582. The split - the first in the NANPA area to take place since 2007 - would take place in early 2012 unless the exhaust date moves back farther or the decision is overturned.[1]

Almost immediately after the PUC decision, a grassroots movement began circulating an online petition to request the PA-PUC cancel the split, in favor of a overlay plan.[2] The telecommunications industry have also submitted petitions for an overturning of the split and replacing with an 814/582 overlay as well.[3]

As a result of the strong protest, the split was placed on indefinite hold in January 2011. Further consultations will take place before the PUC makes a final decision on whether or not to change the split to an overlay. The exhaust date also moved back to early 2015 from its original projection of 2013 as well.[4]
